Article Guidelines
The first paragraph should catch the reader’s eye. Your model should be the opening paragraph of a
good short story, not the beginning of an academic essay. You may want to link your idea to a current,
well-known (Canadian) justice issue.
At the outset, your reader should have a general idea of where you are going – but you don’t need a
roadmap. We need to know in the first paragraph that you are writing about why we should ban texting
while driving, for example, but not that you will give us two arguments and two examples. (See also
Andrew Leigh’s “A few tips for opinion piece writers” at www.andrewleigh.org/pdf/OpEd_Tips.pdf).
Accuracy, brevity and clarity – the writing should be concise, but the meaning must come through very
clearly and be well backed up with references and a solid conclusion.
▪ Your submission will be read for content and clarity upon receipt at CCJA. All edits will be Tracked
with Comments for the author(s) to accept, reject, or revise.
▪ We recommend the use of headings and reserve the right to make any such additions.
▪ We provide a summary (100–120 words) with author approval. It appears beneath the by line and a
French version appears at the end of the article.
▪ Contact us if you have an idea for a Special Issue and are willing to serve as Guest Editor.
▪ APA Format. Times New Roman 12.

Writing for the Justice Report
The Justice Report features concise, accessible articles written by academics, practitioners, and students.
These contributions are professional and policy-oriented rather than peer-reviewed academic papers, with
an emphasis on clarity, timeliness, and engagement with current justice issues. The Justice Report also
highlights news and initiatives from CCJA and its regional
affiliates and is the Association’s national publication, helping fulfill our public education mandate by
providing balanced information to foster informed debate and contribute to policy development.
