The Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for one (1) full-time tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies, who will contribute to our programs in Criminology or Law & Society. The appointment will begin July 1, 2020, or shortly thereafter.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Indigenous Studies, Sociology, Criminology, Law & Society, or related field by the date of the appointment or shortly thereafter. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate’s research agenda will fall within the field of Indigenous Studies and Criminology or Law & Society, with a particular focus on the experiences of First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit contexts. The successful candidate’s record of research, teaching and service should demonstrate an understanding of Indigenous knowledges, methodologies, epistemologies and pedagogies. The successful candidate will do research that draws on decolonizing and other Indigenous perspectives and that is informed by a long-term engagement with Indigenous communities, organizations and institutions.

The successful candidate will show excellence in research demonstrated by:

1) a record of creative and professional work that engages with collaborative/collective knowledge building with Indigenous communities, both within and beyond the university in various public fora,

2) impactful publications in venues important to the field (including academic journals, edited volumes and monographs with academic and other presses, and relevant other outlets),

3) participation in professional and other associations and organizations critical to the production and dissemination of Indigenous Studies and Indigenous knowledges intersecting with the fields of Criminology or Law & Society,

4) successful and/or pending applications for fellowships and/or grant funding from competitive funding sources,

5) the submitted research statement (part of the cover letter), and

6) strong endorsements by referees of high standing.

The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to develop an excellent teaching program informed by Indigenous pedagogies and be a strong mentor at the undergraduate and graduate level. We are particularly interested in candidates who want to participate in increasing Indigenous knowledges, epistemologies, and methodologies throughout the department and University. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, letters of reference, and the teaching dossier to include a teaching statement outlining a teaching philosophy and approaches to knowledge building, and evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities (including performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference posters or presentations), submitted as part of the application. Finally, the successful candidate must have a proven record of activities that contribute to equity and diversity across different communities.

The successful candidate will teach in the undergraduate program at the University of Toronto Mississauga and be part of a cross-departmental effort to seed an Indigenous Studies center at UTM. They will also be a member of the Graduate Department of Sociology, University of Toronto. The University of Toronto Graduate Program in Sociology is a tri-campus program, staffed by faculty from the University’s three campuses, and housed at the St. George (downtown) campus. There are also a range of opportunities for affiliation and engagement with a range of institutions at the University of Toronto, including, but not limited to, the Centre for Indigenous Studies, the Centre of Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies, and the Centre for Transnational and Diaspora Studies.
