SUMMARY:ACJA Webinar: Domestic Violence Amidst A Pandemic: A Calgary Perspective
DESCRIPTION:The ACJA extends an invitation for participation in the Webinar Series that seeks to inform\, unite\, and connect justice stakeholders in both public and private spheres. Members of the public are welcome to attend too. \nThe February webinar presentation\, Domestic Violence Amidst a Pandemic: A Calgary Perspective is scheduled for Tuesday\, February 2nd\, from 11-12 PM (MST). In this presentation\, Meghan Costello and Joy Steppacher\, will discuss HomeFront’s role in the Calgary community\, as well as share how a foundation of collaboration made adaption during our current pandemic possible. Using a combination of client stories and quantitative data\, this presentation will highlight some of the trends we are seeing in domestic violence amidst a pandemic. Finally\, they will look ahead at what can be learned from natural disasters as HomeFront strategizes their continued mission to support victims of domestic violence in the city of Calgary. \nPresenters: \nMeghan Costello is the Program and High Risk Management Initiative Coordinator with HomeFront (a Calgary organization that works to support victims of domestic violence through the criminal court process). Meghan holds a Bachelors’ Degree in Criminal Justice Studies from Mount Royal University and is currently pursuing her Masters of Social Work through Wilfred Laurier University. She has extensive experience working with vulnerable communities and those at high risk for victimization through her work on the High Risk Management Initiative (HRMI) committee as a case manager and now as the coordinator. \nJoy Steppacher is a Research and Evaluation Associate with HomeFront. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto\, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Ryerson University and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Calgary. Joy was one of HomeFront’s first Early Case Resolution Specialists at Calgary’s Specialized Domestic Violence Court. She also worked as a HomeFront case manager\, providing support to victims whose matters were proceeding through the justice system. Today\, Joy supports HomeFront’s research and evaluation efforts and is leading projects with government and community agencies in Alberta. \nAttendance is FREE but limited.
